Nutrition

I became interested in the power of nutrition after suffering chronic heartburn symptoms for months. The prescribed PPI did not relieve the symptoms in the first place and secondly, I was not willing to take a pill every day for the rest of my life. To cut a long story short, a change in diet brought symptom relief in days. Although to completely heal my gut symptoms, I needed two courses of detailed protocol that included highly specific antibiotics.

I point this out to illustrate that I am by no means discounting the importance of conventional medication. My hope is that conventional medicine practitioners will more and more recognise the value and contribution that diet can play in the cause and resolution of many chronic conditions.

The field of nutrition research has a reputation for inconsistency and conflicting messages. Everyone is familiar with the cycle of “eggs are good – eggs are bad – and back to eggs are bad”. The media push for eating less meat is never ending. At the same time there is a crisis of insufficient iron levels of across all population groups. A low iron status not only leads to fatigue, poor sport and work performance but also increase the risk for early osteoporosis.
