TEEN INSPIRE RESILIENCE:
BREATH TRAINING COURSE

"Breath work can change your mental state in as little as 5 minutes"

Mental health among teens is a hot topic in today's environment. There are few options available to teens to help them manage stress. Exercise is certainly a very effective stress mitigation strategy but is often put on the back burner when there is so much pressure on academics. Mediation can certainly work but is often difficult to do when stress levels are high as is the case during exam periods.

Trying to shield them from stress or minimising stress is not always possible nor optimal. A better solution is to improve their stress resilience - their ability to cope. Breathing is the integral connection between the mind and the body. By changing your breath, you can change your (mental) state.

Breathing impacts exercise performance, sleep, focus, concentration and most importantly it is a powerful tool to help regulate the nervous system. Being able to consciously change your state from stressed to a state of calm focus will increase your teen's stress resilience.

Learning a few situational-specific breath principles can go a long way in helping to cope with acute and chronic periods of stress. The way you feel will influence how you breathe. BUT the way you breathe can change how you feel in a very short time.

To accommodate shorter attention span and reinforce techniques and concepts this course is designed over 3 days. Theory and concepts are introduced in a gym setting where teens can move and practice.  Games are used on land and in the water to keep teens engaged and make lessons fun.

The breathing techniques learnt will help teens perform better in  the classroom as well as in the ocean if they are surfers or swimmers. The pool based exercises reinforce breathing techniques and introduce stress in a safe environment. Exposure to a safe but stressful situation is a powerful way to learn the physical signs and mental responses to stress. Learning to recognise a change of state and tools to manage themselves will last a lifetime.
